Those who believe the US should have stayed forever don’t understand or won’t accept that the Taliban had already won on the ground against a ghost or paper army and were held back only by US airstrikes which were inflicting heavy casualties on civilians and driving more Afghans to the Taliban, and that American and Afghan casualties were increasing year over year until peace talks started. The choice was between a peace deal and an orderly withdrawal or cutting and running, leaving a mess behind. Those who resisted the former because they wanted to stay forever brought about the latter.
